Calligraphy a Form of Art

Writing takes on a whole new meaning when you use calligraphy. Using calligraphy is a form of art in the shape of handwriting and penmanship. A famous Chinese calligrapher referred to calligraphy as a way to add meaning to writing through forms and gestures.

The word calligraphy from Greek means kallos (beauty) and graphe (writing), the Greek definition of beautiful writing. A modern-day term for the practice of calligraphy is “the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious and skillful manner”.

History has seen calligraphy over time as a means of writing stories. It has developed over thousands of years according to the transmission speed, technical skills and materials, limitations of a person, and time and place.

The earliest forms of calligraphy can be found in the form of scrapings in soil, paintings on the walls of caves that tell stories in the form of letters and pictures, and them onto Mediaeval Time, the Baroque manuscripts and Renaissance.

You can find calligraphy in different types of had lettered inscriptions and patterns, to exquisite pieces of art work in the form of abstract, where the letter are used as a way of expression, sometimes legible, sometimes not.

There are many different disciplines of calligraphy from classical to non-classical to typography. The style depends completely on the artist and his mood. There are lots of ways to use calligraphy. You will find calligraphy used on invitations to different occasions such as birthdays, weddings, funerals, and other special occasions. Calligraphy is also used for logos in businesses, religious art, inscriptions on stone, commissioned calligraphic art, props and moving images for television and film, memorial documents, maps, testimonials, and many other pieces of work that involve some form of creative writing.

Professional calligraphers today pride themselves on their expertise which involves years of study and practice. The expert calligrapher is knowledgeable in historical calligraphy and keeps up to date on the latest methods and practices of calligraphy. While many professional calligraphers strive for perfection and their work can inspire almost anyone to give it a try, calligraphy is something that almost anyone can do, not matter what your age is.

There are few materials and very little space involved in order to do calligraphy, just a pen and paper is all it takes. While calligraphy is a form of art, it does require more patience and detail than artistic talent. That means that you do not have to be an artist to do calligraphy.

The art of calligraphy involves using letters in different styles of artistic strokes. There are many different styles and many are derived strictly from the artist’s imagination. Some of the most beautiful calligraphy was created from the artist’s spontaneity.

Today calligraphy has found its way onto the World Wide Web, replacing the pen and paper in the hand of the designer. There are programs that will do the calligraphy for you, or programs that will teach you how to do calligraphy. The options are endless.
